As Many Of Us Depart For A Longish Holiday… On The Fourth…

. . .We should remain mindful that a public health crisis is growing more dire, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Even as Merck makes special provisions to manufacture additional runs of the highly effective vaccine, getting people in Butembo and Beni to come in for a ring vaccination remains a fraught process. As we noted last week, radio and TV spots by Dikembe Mutombo should help allay fears, but the outbreak shows little sign of turning toward closure.

As the most recent WHO report notes, in fact, new areas are showing flare ups — ones once thought contained. This will be a two year process, minimum:

. . . .The Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in the North Kivu and Ituri provinces continues at a stable pace this week. Although response operations were temporarily interrupted in Beni following two days of insecurity in the surrounding areas, operations have largely resumed. However, in the town of Musienene, violent threats persist against healthcare workers (HCW) and local security forces providing assistance to the response efforts. Furthermore, response activities in Kambau health area, Manguredjipa health zone were also suspended following security incidents.

Of growing concern this week, are the current hotspots of Mabalako, particularly the Aloya health area, and Mandima, which were the first health zones to report EVD cases in August/September 2018. . . .

Now you know. And. . . for the love of all that is true and good about America, please boycott Trump’s ode to himself, on the National Mall this weekend. I’ll be scarce by Wednesday, through next Tuesday. Onward.
